After three EPs french producer NIKY NINE finally blesses us with his debut record “Suncore”. It takes us to a distant future and the future is awesome, if you’re a friend of a nice apocalypse and dystopia. Which we definitely are.
The Intro: Is it just me or does it actually sound like the Soundtrack to the Terminator movies? Is that on purpose? Just a coincidence? In every case it’s a nice entrance and sets the tone to the following eleven tracks.
After the intro you hear engine sounds which lead to the track “cars”. The name should say it all, but in my case I don’t feel the urge to drive somewhere, well maybe to the next dance floor because the pulsating beats and sharp synths forcing me to move. After a short break it starts all over again, no doubt a track that will do its purpose in making you dance in the club or at a live show.
The same energy continues, but now darker with “deadchrome” and this is the kind of sound I would have loved as the Soundtrack to the movie adaption of “Ready Player One”, exactly this kind of music I had in mind while reading the book. Maybe the movie would’ve turned out better with this accompaniment. (The book is pretty good though.)
Well did I say that deadchrome was dark? Nevermind, because with “Exhausted Divinity” were going a step further and nearly reaching the horror genre. The following 04:47 drape you in a blanket of atmospheric synthesizer sounds and slow rhythms. Some would say it’s a good track to chill, but for me it rather builds suspense and the feeling of a rising threat. Something bad is coming and that is a good thing.
What in the past track felt like a challenge, a fight, a parcour of emotions evolves with “Aftermath” now to a reward. The pleasing sounds of rolling credits of a pretty hard game you just mastered, a small “good job” in the form of sound. You get the idea that you just finished something, in the middle of the record. Well the most important part is that the mood is right, and right it is.
And just when you get the feeling that the record takes a turn to more positive and calm vibes, “Prey” starts. Immediately you feel like you’re just that, prey. I get thrown back in time, 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger (again), The Running Man. The feeling crawls up to you and we all know how this ends for most of the participants. Reiterative, driving, oppressing, threatening, awesome.
The following two tracks break with the tempo, it gets slower and quite hot. With “Thunder Kiss” and “Tears” a vibe a sexappeal pulsating through the room, you could even say it gets romantic. But not for long.
“Lost Souls” follows it’s two predecessors with the slow and chilling vibe, it kind of feels like a long and slow intro to the following track “Suncore”. And Suncore deserves that because it’s not going to let you take a breath, a bit of “easing in” is a good thing at this point. Without a doubt a good pick for the name of the record.
The final stroke makes the “Outro”, dark, gritty, pulsating, non-melodic. Just the end of the world and we like it that way.

Nach drei EPs beglückt uns französischer Producer NIKY NINE endlich mit seinem Debüt Album. Das verfrachtet uns in die Zukunft und diese ist super, wenn man auf Apocalypse und Dystopie steht. Was wir in jeden Fall tun.
Das Intro: Geht es nur mir so oder scheinen die ersten Klänge wie direkt aus dem Terminator Soundtrack? Absicht? Zufall? In jeden Fall ein schöner Einstieg der den Tonus für die folgenden elf Tracks setzt.
Nach dem Intro hört man Motorengeräusche die den Track “cars” einleiten. Der Name soll wohl Programm sein, aber ein “racing” Gefühl bekomme ich nicht, eher einen dancefloor vibe. deftige Bässe, knackige synths, kurze Pause… und dann geht es wieder los, ganz klarer Club Sound zu dem man sich gut bewegen kann.
Mit der gleichen Energie, aber düsterer geht es weiter mit “deadchrome” und genau diesen Sound hätte ich gerne gehabt bei der Verfilmung von “Ready Player One”, exakt sowas habe ich mir beim Lesen des Buches damals vorgestellt. Vielleicht hätte das den Film auch etwas besser gemacht. (Das Buch ist aber sehr lesenswert)
Nun habe ich gesagt dass deadchrome düster ist? Vergesst es, jetzt geht es mit “Exhausted Divinity” fast schon ins Horrorgenre. Die folgenden 04:47 wickeln einen in eine Decke aus atmosphärischen Synthesizer Klängen und langsame Rhythmen. Manche würden sagen ein Track zum Chillen, ich denke eher dass er die Spannung steigen und ein Gefühl von Bedrohung aufkommen lässt. Und irgendwie ist das auch gut so.
Was im vorigen Track eine Art Herausforderung war, ein Kampf, ein Hindernislauf, wird mit diesem Track “Aftermath” belohnt. Ich komme mir vor wie bei den Credits eines schweren Games, ein kleines “gut gemacht” in Sound. Es überkommt einen ein abschließendes positives Gefühl, nur eben mitten im Album. Naja, Hauptsache die Stimmung stimmt, und die tut es.
Und gerade wenn man denkt dass das Album eine Wendung ins positive und ruhigere macht, kommt “Prey”. Hier ist der Name Programm, genau so fühlt man sich nämlich, wie der Gejagte. Ich werde zurückgeworfen, 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger (schon wieder), Running Man. Dieses Gefühl erschleicht sich mir und wir wissen alle wie das für die meisten Beteiligten ausgeht. Repetitiv, treibend, drückend, bedrohlich, geil.
Bei den folgenden zwei Tracks macht das Album einen Bruch. Es wird langsamer und geht heiß her denn bei “Thunder Kiss” und “Tears” schwebt ein Hauch von Sexappeal mit. Fast schon romantische Musik für die Stunden zu zweit oder eben alleine zum Entspannen.
“Lost Souls” schlägt in die gleiche Kerbe, Wobei ich in dem Track fast ein längeres Intro für das folgende Stück “Suncore” sehe. Und “Suncore” verdient auf jeden Fall ein längeres langsames Intro da er selbst wenig Zeit zum verschnaufen bietet.
Nicht ohne Grund der titelgebende Track des Albums.
Den Schlussstrich übernimmt das Outro. Düster, wabernd, unmelodisch. Einfach nur das Ende der Welt wie wir es mögen.
