About a year after we got their respective last records, Dana Jean Phoenix and Powernerd
are back with a collaboration album for the ages. We already knew DJP and Powernerd just
work perfectly together from their previous joint efforts, most recently on the last Powernerd
album “Far from Human”, where Dana contributed her angelic vocals to two of our favorite
tracks, “Hyperdrive” and “Dancing”. It is therefore really no surprise that this album has
become an absolute masterpiece.
Powernerd’s rougher, guitar-heavy approach to Synthwave and Dana’s groovy Synthpop
style blend together to something that resonates on so many levels, it’s mind-shattering. On
top of the refreshing mix of styles, this album is so exceptionally well produced, it could well
be played by the big mainstream outlets (which is supposed to be a compliment, in case that
is not clear).
The album’s arc is exceptionally well crafted, perfectly pacing through all the different facets
it has to offer, anywhere between the MegaWAVE and the MEGAwave – all throughout the
listening experience there is not a single moment when it feels repetitive or you won’t find
yourself fully immersed in the sound.
Starting out with the extremely powerful opener “Figure Me Out”, you are pulled in
immediately. Even though we had listened to it probably a million times before the album
dropped due to the sheer fat that it was also the first single, it just keeps getting better. The
extremely catchy lyrics, the super-groovy bassline, the epic guitar solo – it’s just all there.
This is not only going to be an amazing highlight on the dancefloor, but would also make for
a perfect climax to any live performance.
Here we also want to mention the fabulous remix by New Arcades featured on the album,
which gives the already amazing song a fresh new twist with a more classical Synthwave feel
to it. Even though the remix comes with a more straightforward beat, it manages to still keep
the climaxes exactly where they should be.
The following title track hits the breaks on the tempo and lets us drift away to the feeling of
relaxing in the sun on a warm summer day, maybe slightly dozing off with a light breeze
flowing over us. DJP just describes it best herself: “The livin’ feeling of the wind blowing
through my hair; the soft caress of the sun on my face,.. “. Simply beautiful.
We continue with something more upbeat and extremely danceable. “Fight these Robots” is
musically an ode to Daft Punk and the likes with distorted synths and vocoder samples. The
best thing about it might well be the beautifully self-ironic lyrics that juxtapose the obvious
inspiration with its lyrical demise. Or maybe it is also a challenge to the ever self-replicating
musical process that can be observed in some corners of the industry, by artists that have
always found a way to clearly re-invent themselves? We wouldn’t know…
In the Straplocked remix, we get a darker, cyberpunk version of the song, with a pushing
bassline, and bladerunner-style spherical synths. It does take away some of the winks from
the original, but replaces it with loads of ambience. We honestly would have expected
nothing else from Straplocked than being able to orchestrate such an incredible
transformation.
The musical journey proceeds with a rather thoughtful track. Especially in the current times
where we are constantly surrounded by stress, fear, and negative emotions and are literally
isolated, I have found “Living Rent Free” to be a gentle reminder to not let the negative take
over. The beautiful calm and dreamy melodies of the track do their part in helping you find
some peace and quiet even if the times are all too crazy.
“Sunrise Stance” picks up the tempo again considerably. It’s the ultimate 80’s-inspired funk
track and we simply love it. It is incredibly hard to sit still and only nod your head when
listening from it. Considering this is being written by Germans, this has got so say something.
On top of all the beautiful funk, this song probably has the best keytar line ever to be heard.
With “New Technology” we venture forth into mid-paced Synthpop. The groovy bassline and
clear, melodic synth treble combine to form an incredibly catchy song that could make The
Weeknd green with envy.
The closing number “Moves, Moves, Moves” gives us a final amazing upbeat dance number
that I personally cannot wait to hear in a club atmosphere. A little more head-nodding and
hip-shaking before Dana sweetly sends us off with the words “Go, live your life!”.
So I guess this is exactly what we are going to do now, but before you do anything else you
should make sure to listen to this fantastic record! It’s definitely worth every second of your
precious time.

Circa ein Jahr nachdem wir ihre jeweils letzten Veröffentlichungen zu hören bekommen
haben, melden sich Dana Jean Phoenix und Powernerd mit einer epischen Kollaboration
zurück. Von ihren bisherigen gemeinsamen Unterfangen wussten wir ja bereits, dass die
Kombination DJP und Powernerd einfach wie füreinander geschaffen ist, zuletzt auf dem
aktuellen Powernerd Album „Far From Human“, wo Dana mit ihrer engelsgleichen Stimme
zwei unserer Lieblingstracks, „Hyperdrive“ und „Dancing“, vergoldete. Dementsprechend war
es nicht wirklich eine große Überraschung dass dieses Album eine kleine Perle geworden ist.
Der raue, Gitarren-lastige Synthwave-Ansatz von Powernerd und Dana’s grooviger
Synthpop-Stil vermischen sich hier zu etwas, das auf so vielen funktioniert und in seiner
Gesamtheit wirklich atemberaubend ist. Zusätzlich zu dem erfrischenden Stil-Mix, der uns
hier präsentiert wird, ist dieses Album so herausragend produziert, dass es ohne weiteres in
den großen Mainstream-Medien laufen könnte (was, für alle die sich noch unsicher sind, ein
Kompliment sein soll).
Der Spannungsbogen ist herausragend konzipiert, und steuert und gezielt durch die
verschiedenen Facetten, die hier geboten werden, vom MegaWAVE bis hin zum
MEGAwave. Das gesamte Hörerlebnis kling niemals repetitive und man ist stetig vollständig
versunken.
Beginnend mit dem enorm kraftvollen Opener „Figure Me Out“ wird man direkt in die Welt
von Megawave hineingezogen. Selbst wenn wir es schon gefühlt eine Million mal gehört
haben, alleine deshalb, weil es die erste Singleauskopplung ist, wird es einfach immer
besser. Der Gesang mit Ohrwurmgarantie, der enorm groovige Bass, das epische
Gitarrensolo – dieser Song hat einfach alles. Dieser Track wird nicht nur ein Highlight auf der
Tanzfläche werden, sondern würde auch den schillernde Höhepunkt jeder Liveperformance
darstellen.
Hier möchten wir auch den fantastischen Remix von New Arcades nicht unerwähnt lassen,
der dem tollen Original noch einmal einen frischen Twist verpasst, mit einem klassischeren
Synthwave Sound, der trotz seinem geradlinigeren Beat die Höhepunkte adäquat
herausarbeitet.
Der folgende Titeltrack steigt im Tempo steigt deutlich auf die Bremse und lässt unsere
Gedanken wandern, hin zu einem entspannten Sommertag in der Sonne, vielleicht ein wenig
hinwegdösend in einer leichten Brise. DJP beschreibt es eigentlich selbst am besten: “The
livin’ feeling of the wind blowing through my hair; the soft caress of the sun on my face,.. “.
Einfach nur schön.
Es folgt ein Uptempo Track, der extrem tanzbar ist. „Fight these Robots“ ist eine kliene
musikalische Ode an Daft Punk und Konsorten mit verzerrten Synths und Vocoder Samples.
Das Beste daran könnten fast schon die wunderbar selbstironischen Lyrics sein, die die
offensichtliche Inspiration ihrem lyrischen Untergang gegenüberstellen. Oder vielleicht ist es
auch in gewisser Weise eine Kampfansage an den sich stets selbstreplizierenden
musikalischen Prozess in manchen Industriezweigen von zwei Künstlern, die es verstehen
sich immer wieder selbst neu zu erfinden? Wer weiß das schon…
Der Straplocked-Remix liefert uns eine düstere Cyberpunk-Interpretation des Songs mit
treibenden Bässen und atmosphärischen Synths im Bladerunner Stil. Es nimmt ein bisschen
was von Augenzwinkern des Originals und ersetzt es mit einer Riesenportion Atmosphäre.
Wir hätten nichts anderes von Straplocked erwartet, als die Fähigkeit einen Track so
vollkommen auf den Kopf zu stellen.
Unsere musikalische Reise geht mit einem deutlich nachdenklicheren Track weiter.
Besonders in der heutigen Zeit, wo wir konstant von Stress, Angst und negativen Gefühlen
umgeben sind und im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes isoliert sind, ist „Living Rent Free“ eine
schöne Erinnerung daran, das Negative nicht überwiegen zu lassen. Die wunderschönen
ruhigen und verträumten Melodien des Tracks tun ihr Übriges um hier einen kleines
Rückzugsort zu schaffen, wenn draußen alles etwas verrücktspielt.
Mit “Sunrise Stance” zieht das Tempo wieder deutlich an, Es ist der ultimative 80er-inspirierte
Funk Track – wir lieben es einfach. Es fällt einfach unglaublich schwer, hierbei stillzusitzen
und nur mit dem Kopf zu nicken. Man beachte, dass dies von Deutschen verfasst wurde –
das hat also vermutlich etwas zu heißen. Zu all dem fantastischen Funk bekommen wir hier
auch noch die beste Keytar Line, die je performt wurde..
“New Technology” ist wieder eher im Midtempo Synthpop angesiedelt. Der groovige Bass
und die klaren, melodischen Synth-Höhen vereinen sich zu einen unglaublichen Ohrwurm,
der The Weeknd vor Neid erblassen lassen würde.
Das Finale “Moves, Moves, Moves” liefert uns eine finale Uptempo Tanznummer, die ich
persönlich am liebsten sofort auf der großen Tanzfläche hören möchte. Noch ein bisschen
Kopfnicken und Hüftenwackeln, bevor und Dana mit den Worten „Go, live your life!“ entlässt.
Und genau das werden wir jetzt auch tun – aber bevor ihr irgendetwas anderes anfangt,
solltet ihr zuallererst einmal in dieses fantastische Album reinhören. Es ist auf jeden Fall jede
Sekunde eurer kostbaren Zeit wert!
