Neon Nox is back with his second longplayer “The Last Stand”. After his debut “Syndicate Shadow” was already one of the best Synthwave/Outrun albums that we had heard in a long time, we were enormously excited for what the successor would have in store for us.
One thing upfront: „The Last Stand” consequently carries on the strong line that the debut started and is in no way inferior. The particular strength lies in its atmosphere, which it builds consequently and carefully.
With the opener “Rogue” it gives us a restrained, careful introduction into the new album. With the following titles “Mass Effect”, “Digital Contact” and “Arrival” the reserved, almost understated vibes are carried on and additively, bit by bit, a whole small world is created that immediately pulls us in. Ince you have entered it, it is almost impossible to escape the grasp of Neon Nox’ musical universe. We are helplessly under its spell and are invited to dream. The perfect outrun feeling arises.
The middle part shifts gears after all the dreamy sounds and comes in a much rougher tone. Driving beats, dominating synths and the occasional guitar riff we are ripped out of our dreams for a bit to fully enjoy the uptempo.
Towards the end of the album, it is getting somewhat calmer again, and we can comfortably dream before it releases us back into everyday life with a warm feeling.
We do not want to elaborate on any songs in more depth – “The Last Stand” is one of those musical pieces that are supposed to be seen and experienced as a whole and works its charm and atmosphere best as such. In its entirety it finds the perfect balance between straightforwardness and diversity, between uptempo and dreaminess.
Neon Nox delivers a technically extraordinarily strong album that is hard to turn off after you started it – you just let it play and let it do its magic. It is apparent that Neon Nox was cautious to to reinvent himself and develop , with stronger harmonies and facets, instead of blindly plagiarizing himself. One almost could criticize that the album is too well-rounded, without any rough edges – in retrospect this would have likely been out of place, though. Outrun is supposed to pull you into another world and leave you to your adventures there. And this is exactly what “The Last Stand” does.

Neon Nox ist zurück mit seinem zweiten Longplayer „The Last Stand“. Da bereits sein Debüt
„Syndicate Shadow“ für uns bereits eines der besten Synthwave/Outrun Alben war, die wir lange Zeit gehört haben, waren wir natürlich sehr gespannt, was der Nachfolger nun zu bieten hat.
Eines vorweg: „The Last Stand“ führt konsequent die starke Linie weiter, die das Erstlingswerk
begonnen hat und steht ihm in nichts nach. Besonders stark ist das Album in seiner Atmosphärik, die bedacht und konsequent über die Laufzeit aufgebaut wird.
Mit dem Opener „Rogue“ gibt es einen sehr dezenten, vorsichtigen Einstieg in das neue Album. Mit den folgenden Titeln „Mass Effect“, „Digital Contact“ und „Arrival“ werden die zurückhaltenden, fast schon untertriebenen Vibes fortgeführt und additiv, Stück für Stück eine eigene kleine Welt kreiert, in die mal unmittelbar hineingezogen wird. Und sobald man einmal in ihr gefangen ist, ist es fast unmöglich sich aus den Fängen von Neon Nox’s musikalischem Universum zu befreien. Wir sind hilflos in ihrem Bann und werden zum Träumen eingeladen. Das perfekte Outrun-Feeling stellt sich ein.
Im Mittelteil schaltet nach all den Träumereien einen ordentlichen Gang nach oben und kommt
deutlich rauher daher. Mit treibenderen Beats, dominanteren Synths und sogar dem gelegentlichen fetten Gitarrenriff werden wir aus unseren Träumen gerissen und können uns an dem uptempo erlaben.
Zum Ende des Albums wird es wieder ruhiger, und wir können noch ein wenig wonnevoll träumen bevor es uns mit einem wohligen Gefühl zurück in den Alltag entlässt.
Wir wollen an dieser Stelle überhaupt nicht in der Tiefe auf eigene Songs eingehen – „The Last Stand“ ist eines dieser Werke, die eher als Ganzes gesehen werden sollte und so auch am besten funktioniert. Es findet in seiner Gänze eine perfekte Balance aus Geradlinigkeit und wirklich viel Abwechslung, aus Uptempo und Träumerei.
Neon Nox liefert hier technisch unglaublich starkes Album ab, das man, nachdem man es gestartet hat, schwierig wieder abschalten kann – man lässt es laufen und auf sich wirken. Man merkt das Herzblut, das in diesem Album steckt und wie Neon Nox bedacht darauf war, sich auch ein wenig neu zu erfinden und weiterzuentwickeln, mit stärkeren Harmonien und neuen Facetten, anstatt sich einfach nur selbst zu kopieren. Man könnte fasst bemängeln, dass das Album etwas zu rund geraten ist, ohne Ecken und Kanten – rückblickend hätte es uns in diesem Falle aber vermutlich eher gestört. Outrun sollte einen in eine andere Welt ziehen und einen dort ein Abenteuer erleben lassen, ganz ohne Interventionen. Und genau dies macht „The Last Stand“.
