Carbon Killer – VR Sun

One of the most promising and talented artists in synthwave and around, Carbon Killer, are finally releasing their new album “VR Sun” on December 4th.

While the theme and sound may not particularly fit the holiday season, it is certainly a true gift to all of us. Carbon Killer truly have evolved as musicians and on this particular record sound more powerful, fresh with a beautiful balance of heavy and melodic influences. We are led from atmospheric melodies to heavy riffs to die for and blasting electronic beats, sometimes within a single song, and there is nothing not to love about it.

We start strong with “All Cyborgs are Biomechanical” – a great opener giving us the best of powerful guitar riffs and some crushing electronic beats. This energetic start is followed by one of the most epic collaborations the scene has seen in a while… or maybe ever? Carbon Killer team up with the amazing Powernerd and the almighty VolkorX to bring us one of the most epic and atmospheric songs of the album, titled “eDeath”. A tune straight out of our cyberpunk nightclub fantasy with a sick keyboard solo and beautiful guitar riffs that blend together in a wonderfully chilling atmosphere.

The excitement of the first tracks is at once relieved by “Neon Sign”, a beautifully soft and tranquil song with enchanting female vocals. Despite its melancholy, the track never loses its energy and left us with goosebumps all over.

The two highlights on the album for us are certainly “People of the Night” and “The Girl and the Black Sun”. The former may be a rather classical dark-/shredwave track, but in that it is truly great. It is extremely danceable and puts a nice twist on the usual formula. It’s one of those songs that bring the live music vibe to your living room, that you simply cannot wait to see performed live.

“The Girl and the Black Sun” is the second goosebumps moment on the album. An epic tune that has all the characteristics of a true anthem with the most astounding baritone vocals we have heard in a while.

We close the album with “Dream, Die, Dream Again” – a track that combined everything that is to love about this album into one: a strong atmosphere, epic melodies, powerful riffs. And then, suddenly, it is over, as promptly as it began.

The only thing left to say is that someone surely has used the lockdown productively. 2020 may be long, awful and unnecessary – but at least it gave us this album. And while festivals and concerts have been canceled for now, we are already dreaming of the day when we hear this album performed on the big stage, where Carbon Killer haven proven once again and without a doubt they belong.

Carbon Killer – VR SUN

Die beiden Highlights des Albums für uns sind eindeutig „People of the Night“ und „The Girl and the Black Sun“.

„The Girl and the Black Sun” gibt uns den zweiten Gänsehautmoment auf dem Album.
